For the last 4 years I've been doing an ECU swap to pass NJ inspection. When I had Jan's street header the car would pass with the ECU swap, since I now have his track header, I have to swap the header back to stock or the car fails the visual inspection. I intend to put a hi flow cat back into the exhaust with a Vband section so all I would have to do is swap in the cat for the visual inspection.
When you swap back in the stock ECU - you have to have the ECU EWS system re-initiated / reset because the car will not start once with the stock ECU once it's been through a couple drive cycles with the Vipec. You should also be aware that if you run Jan's 3-bar MAP sensor - you have to switch back to the stock sensor with the factory ECU or you will throw a lean code on your way to inspection (found out this the hard way). As far as passing the EVAP/ Comprehensive Component Monitor / Catalyst self diagnosis - The car passed all with Jan's street header. Hope this is of some use to you. I think maybe someone disconnected one of the ecu's with the key on as I have swapped them back and forth with never having to reset the EWS.

This is REALLY good info. Thanks Jan and Mendra.
My only remaining concern is how the car will behave with the stock ECU and the TVS installed (plus everything else). Whether I'll be able to drive it for an hour or two (at low RPMS) to get all the self-test stuff to pass, without throwing any codes (which must be cleared, then start all over again). P |

Jan I was never able to put my stock ECU back in also....I was able to do it once, then never again. I also would change the ECU only with the battery disconnected.

Paul -assuming Jan (probably can) program the stock ECU to run with the TVS - the two issues I see are - the water pump control (external controller would solve this) and it must be programmed to allow at least 1 full throttle pull through the gears - 1st 2nd for e.g. - The ecu MUST see a full throttle pull to set the Comprehensive component monitor. You also have to factor in what camshaft you are using when you put back in the stock ecu- the stock ecu doesn't like Jan's more aggressive camshafts and will throw a misfire code when idling - which of course will result in a fail or having to clear all your codes.
I know this because in March when I was having my inspection done - I didn't know I had to swap back the stock map sensor. The ECU showed a lean code and of course I failed. After clearing it and swapping the map sensor - it would set everything except the CCM readiness. I did a ton of reading and came up on the fact that it needed the full throttle pull to set that monitor. However I had a map on my stock ECU that was tuned to run meth, so I couldn't do a WOT pull. Once Jan flashed in a stock JCW map - I did the pull (it felt so slow) and presto all the readiness monitors were set. (05-11-2015 11:27 AM)BlimeyCabrio Wrote: This is REALLY good info. I am unsure why it allowed me to do it the first time - I have never tried the swap with the battery disconnected - only with the key out of the car. Maybe things have changed, but from what Jan has informed previously. Can do the OEM ECU, but will be limited to 18-19psi. So if you are swapping the ECU for inspection purposes, it is theoretically possible to just swap the ECU to pass, but if the inspector blips the throttle, it might throwing codes and so no way to pass.

How do the people in NC get around their inspection? Would it be worth it for me to leave my R53 registered where it is now in CO?
