TVS900 Basics
Already have a W/M setup. Its not the best by any means but will be upgraded.
I want to go front mount to open up possibilities of custom intake manifolds. I have a fabricator here that will make pretty much any design I want as long as I can get a flange, and thats no problem. Easily agitated, Half way retarded, and mentally unstable... Cant put up with it? SUCK MY RICHARD!! |

TVS900 Basics
The standard and GP factory I/C's are only just over an inch thick IIRC. Are you saying that if you took an I/C roughly the same thickness, and mounted it 1/2 inch off of the radiator it wouldn't do its job? It would get a little heat soak if left at idle, but you have more surface area out in the breeze with no restrictions or sharp turns. The recovery period should be much quicker than with a top mount.

the more air you put thru the car ie: bigger chargers the bigger the IC you will need to keep up , this is why the METH is so effective, allows you to keep a smaller IC and more boost. Again space is always a premium in our cars. It's the biggest drawback of a Mini

Would it work as well as a intercooler that is the same size but is 4 inches thick? No. As soon as you up the boost the standard and GP intercoolers are pretty taxed....I think your definition of a intercooler working well and my definition of a intercooler working well are very different. Just think, my IAT's are 110 degrees with a ambient of 85 degrees at 30lbs of boost. This is with no meth. 30lbs of boost on my turbo is a easy 230+ degrees. That is a efficient intercooler. There is just not really enough room to put on in, and make it cool the charge very well...Like jan said, this lead to the use of meth. It helps. |

Once the AC is removed there is quite a bit of room behind my JCW nose. Plenty for a 18X6X2 cooler. The problem is the piping, and outlet of the SC... No matter how much thought I put into it, either the headlight or the radiator get in the way. Both of theese obstructions need to be there... Cant do much about the light, but a thicker but narrower radiator, and some plastic trimming could solve that issue.
There is really no need to go with a massive I/C in a good location when a smallish I/C is good enough in an semi addiquate location. I'm just looking to open up the area under the hood to make room for stuff that cannot be relocated, and to try and gain a little in the way of recovery times and heat soak, with having a couple psi lost to pressure drop as a trade off. W/M is great, but I dont (and never have) wanted to rely on it. Its staying in the car no matter what, and will probably stay at the mix I had the best cooling results with. I know there is more power to be had from it if I used even the system I had to its peak potential, BUT if I am a hundred miles from nowhere (like I tend to go) and the tank runs out, I dont want to baby it home, or have thoughts of poping my motor again. I have seen my iat's at 40 degrees on a cool night 58-62 is with my foot on the floor and the charger humming away. How big does an intercooler have to be to repeat that without meth? I just dont see it happening but im use to N/A cars... I could see with the added CFM of the tvs the need to go to a GP intercooler.
a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether... Not that we needed all that for the trip... |

Length depth and height all depend on the unit used to produce the boost and how much boost. The rotrex pushes cool air even at the higher boost levels. This is one reason you can get away with a smaller intercooler....I remember when Jan took me for a ride in a rotrex powered car, I got out and felt the intercooler "hotside" and it was almost as cool as the "cold" side A supercharger like the M45 on a small pulley really needs a bigger intercooler because the charge is hot. Its the same with a turbo. The charge is hot and you need a good intercooler depending on turbo and boost level. So 143 degrees or 62C is still hot to me. Thats hot enough to pull timing. What is the pulley size? I think IIRC the hottest ive ever seen my IAT's on my EVO are 121 degrees post intercooler, this was at 45lbs of boost. This thing has a HUGE intercooler. Intercooler needs change from every setup. Jan has ran just about every intercooler on the MINI and just about every supercharger and setup. I'm sure that Jan is going to send the TVS out with the intercooler that it needs for your goals. |
